Before 1965, the head of government in Jammu and Kashmir held the title of Prime Minister(Wazir-e-Azam) [Governor- Sadr-e-riyasat]

On 31 October 2019, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019, came into effect, bifurcating J&K into two Union TerritoriesJammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

 

Political History of Jammu and Kashmir (1947-2019)

 

1947: Accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India

  • At the time of India’s independence (15th August 1947), Jammu and Kashmir was a princely state under Maharaja Hari Singh.
  • J&K had the option to join India, Pakistan, or remain independent.
  • On 22nd October 1947, Pakistan-backed tribal militias invaded Kashmir (Operation Gulmarg).
  • Maharaja Hari Singh sought India’s help and signed the Instrument of Accession on 26th October 1947, making J&K part of Indiare sent to Kashmir, leading to the First Indo-Pak War (1947-1948).
  • 1st January 1948: India took the issue to the United Nations (UN), which recommended a ceasefire.
  • 1st January 1949: A ceasefire was declared, leading to the division of J&K along the Line of Control (LoC).

1949-1956: Political Developments and the J&K Constitution

  • 1949: Sheikh Abdullah, then Prime Minister of J&K, played a key role in integrating Kashmir with India.
  • 1951: Elections were held to form the J&K Constituent Assembly.
  • 1952: Delhi Agreement was signed between Nehru and Sheikh Abdullah, defining J&K’s autonomy.
  • 1953: Sheikh Abdullah was arrested and dismissed as Prime Minister on suspicions of conspiracy against India. Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad replaced him.
  • 26th January 1957: The Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir came into force, declaring J&K as an integral part of India .

1965-1and Wars with Pakistan

  • 1965: India and Pakistan fought the Second Indo-Pak War over Kashmir.
  • 1966: Tashkent Agreement signed between India and Pakistan.
  • 1971: The Third Indo-Pak War led to the creation of Bangladesh, and Pakistan lost diplomatic strength over Kashmir.
  • 1972: Shimla Agreement was signed, reinforcing the Line of Control (LoC) as the de facto border.
  • 1975: Sheikh Abdullah returned to power after signing the Indira-Sheikh Accord.
